Nicola De Maria

(1954 Foglianese, Italy)

Nicola De Maria is a contemporary Italian artist known for his playful abstractions painted in bright primary colors. While at the beginning of his career, he was interested in experimental photography, he then turned his attention to drawing and painting. In the 1970s, De Maria becomes one of the main exponents of the Transavanguardia group which also included other artists, such as Sandro Chia, Enzo Cucchi and Francesco Celemente. De Maria’s abstract large-scale compositions challenge the space, blurring the limits of where the painting ends and the viewer’s space begins. Often his art presents lyrical, fabled and spiritual references which he shows using a color technique which is inspired by the Italian old masters.

De Maria has received widespread acclaim and success, his work exhibited at three Venice Biennales as well as at Documenta 7 in Kassel. Today, De Maria lves and works in Sannio, Italy. His works are in the collections of the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Turin and at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
